About this wine
Character
A Rioja that favours freshness over power. Slightly transparent garnet red, with a floral, penetrating bouquet of violet blossom, rose petals and a touch of jasmine, accompanied by ripe, crisp dark fruit, fresh herbs, warm bread and cooked almonds.
Terroir and origin
The fruit comes from Moreda in Rioja Alavesa, from the Valdemarra vineyard at 480 metres. The soil is stony clay with limestone. Maisulan farms 20 hectares in Elvillar, Viñaspre and Moreda, sheltered by the Sierra Cantabria, where centuries-old olive trees grow between the vine rows.
Grape variety and winemaking
Tempranillo forms the base, joined by small proportions of Mazuela (Carignan), Viura (Macabeo), Grenache Blanc and Malvasia: a traditional mixed-field blend with white varieties in a red wine. The vines are trained as bush vines in gobelet. After hand-harvesting and sorting, the grapes were de-stemmed and fermented spontaneously at a maximum of 25 °C, with ageing in French barrique. 14.0% vol., dry.
On the palate
Elegant, fine and sensual, with noticeable, defining tannin and clear, balanced acidity. The fruit feels juicy and fleshy: red and blue berries, with undergrowth, sloe, a touch of cinnamon bark and subtle oak. The finish stays fresh, almost tonic, with great tension and very good length.
Food pairing suggestions
Paella de Verduras, truffled polenta with glazed vegetables and salsiccia or bavette with sauce béarnaise and potato-celeriac purée.
Highlights
Eva Fernández and Luis Ruiz de Viñaspre have farmed their old bush vines biodynamically since 2001, drawing on Masanobu Fukuoka's philosophy of do-nothing farming. The average vine age is 45 years; to address soil erosion, the estate works with the Neiker research institute.
