About this wine
Character
A red wine that brings together power and coolness: dense fruit, clear contour, carried by slate minerality and a saline trace. Ester Nin and Carles Ortiz represent the generation in Priorat that shifted the focus from concentration and extraction towards freshness, elegance and terroir expression.
Terroir and origin
La Rodeda measures 0.4 hectares and is listed as its own vineyard on the appellation maps; until a few years ago, the fruit went into the Mas d'en Caçador. The plot faces north and is among the highest-altitude sites in all of Priorat. Alongside black llicorella slate, the soil also contains red quartzite. The steep slopes around Porrera allow no machinery, so Carles Ortiz ploughs with mules.
Grape variety and vinification
The vineyard is planted almost 100% with roughly 80-year-old Garnacha Peluda, known in French as Lladoner Pelut, a distinct red Grenache variant; Carignan is also present. Fermentation takes place with whole clusters, ageing 100% in new French barriques.
On the palate
The nose has depth: fresh, sweet blackberries, warm blueberry cake, liquorice, fine tobacco, along with smoke, truffle, earthy notes and a saline breeze. On the palate, freshness carries the wine: juicy, cool, multi-faceted, with palpable energy and precisely judged oak.
Food pairings
Wagyu beef with sea salt and olive oil, alongside sweet potatoes with rosemary, or charcoal-grilled squab with red lentils and pimientos de Padrón with rum-lime cream. For a vegetarian option, liquorice gnocchi with orange sauce and cardamom is a fine match.
Special features
Every cork from Familia Nin Ortiz reads "biodynamic since day one". The estate is one of the few Spanish members of the Renaissance des Appellations founded by Nicolas Joly; the wines ferment spontaneously, without fining or filtration. Open at least two hours before serving and drink from a large red wine glass.
