About this wine
Character
Bright ruby red with garnet reflections at the rim. On the nose, dark berries, graphite and delicate herbs, cool and precisely defined. The wine favours freshness and finesse over sheer power.
Terroir and origin
The vines grow on the steep slopes around Porrera, some at altitudes of up to 700 metres, among the highest vineyards in Priorat. The soil is llicorella, the region's characteristic black slate. The slopes are too steep for tractors, so Carles Ortiz ploughs with mules, a method no one in Porrera had used since the 1960s.
Grape variety and vinification
Garnacha and Cariñena, the two classic varieties of Priorat. Fermentation happens spontaneously, and the wine is aged in foudres, demi-muids or amphorae. It is bottled unfined and unfiltered.
On the palate
Dry, with vibrant acidity and fine-grained tannins. The slate minerality carries the wine into a long finish, and at 13.5% vol. it remains light-footed.
Food pairings
With herb-crusted rack of lamb, braised aubergines with smoked paprika or grilled vegetables with romesco. Also pairs well with game dishes, a bean stew with chorizo, and aged Manchego.
Special features
«Biodynamic since day one» is printed on every cork from the estate. Ester Nin and Carles Ortiz met in 2007 at a biodynamic seminar, and their first joint vintage was released in 2008. Familia Nin Ortiz is one of the few Spanish members of La Renaissance des Appellations, the association of biodynamic producers founded by Nicolas Joly.
