About this wine
Character
Terra Vermella de Nin 2017 is a dry white wine made from Catalan Parellada that favours freshness over fullness. 12.0% ABV, 6.5 grams of acidity and a pH of 2.8 produce a taut, tension-filled wine that initially needs plenty of air and time in the glass.
Terroir and origin
The vineyard covers one hectare at an altitude of 550 metres in the Alt Penedès, in the Pla de Manlleu. The wine takes its name from the red clay soil: terra vermella. The 37-year-old vineyard is farmed by its owner, Jaume Nin Llort, a member of Ester Nin's family.
Grape variety and winemaking
Parellada Montonegra, a pink-skinned mutation of Parellada discovered here by Ester Nin and Carles Ortiz. The grapes are lightly crushed, left to sit for 24 hours, then pressed slowly. Fermentation begins spontaneously in a 300-litre barrel, where the wine is also aged. Despite the coloured berry skins and the time on skins, the wine remains pale.
On the palate
The nose opens reductively with firecrackers, sulphur matches and petrol, then unfolds into salted lemon, limequat, tahini, lemongrass, petrichor and stone. On the palate the wine is more inviting and fleshier: light-yellow to green fruit, juicy and carried by salinity, along with zest, bitter herbs, white and yellow flowers, pollen, likely wild fennel and a touch of ginger. The reductive note lingers, while the acidity keeps everything in motion.
Food pairings
Bacalhau à Brás, aubergine caviar with cod and lentils, and Tomapork Dry Aged Schwäbisch-Hällisch pork with fennel salad.
Distinctive features
Ester Nin and Carles Ortiz have farmed biodynamically since their first vintage together in 2008 — "Biodynamic since day one" appears on every cork. They have already revived the extremely rare Carignan Blanc. The estate is a member of La Renaissance des Appellations, the association of biodynamic producers founded by Nicolas Joly.
