About this wine
Character
A Priorat red that brings together concentration and light-footedness: dark, almost sweetish fruit over a cool, mineral axis, with earthy-dark nuances and delicate herbal notes. Deep garnet red with subtle lightening towards the rim. Ester Nin and Carles Ortiz have worked biodynamically since their first vintage together in 2008; every cork reads "Biodynamic since day one".
Terroir and origin
The Mas d'en Caçador site is among the most privileged in the Priorat: north-facing, on pure Llicorella slate, with vines that are in part over 100 years old. The vineyards around Porrera rise to 700 metres and are too steep for mechanical cultivation. Ploughing is therefore done with mules, a method no one in Porrera had practised since the 1960s.
Grape variety and vinification
Grenache and Carignan, spontaneously fermented, aged in foudres, demi-muids or amphorae, unfined and unfiltered. The oak ageing is still clearly noticeable at this youthful stage, showing as woodsmoke and vanilla. 14.0% vol., dry.
On the palate
Intense and aromatic on the nose: black cherries, preserved dark berries and plum compote, followed by dark chocolate and oriental spices such as clove, cinnamon and cardamom. On the palate, the sweetish fruit meets pronounced minerality, the tannin is fine-grained and distinct, the acidity still youthful. A playful wine that stays cool and light-footed.
Food recommendations
With dishes featuring fruity, spice-forward sauces: beetroot with balsamic marinade on black lentils, barbecue with fig red cabbage and potato wedges or lamb ragout with chickpeas, tacos and cumin. Open at least two hours in advance and serve in a large red wine glass.
Special features
Familia Nin Ortiz is one of the few Spanish estates in La Renaissance des Appellations, the association founded by Nicolas Joly for biodynamic producers.
