About this wine
Character
This dry Sauvignon Blanc from Gamlitz spent extended time maturing in the cellar prior to bottling—as indicated by the designation 'Spätfüllung' (late bottling). At 12.5% ABV, it remains lean and agile, with the 1500 ml format allowing its development to progress more slowly and gracefully than in a standard bottle.
Terroir and Origin
Gamlitz is situated in a unique microclimate between the Koralpe range and the Slovenian border. Opok marl and calcareous clay shape the soils, imparting the estate's wines with their distinctive minerality. Slope inclines of up to 70 percent provide excellent drainage and force the vines deep into the subsoil. The Pannonian climate, with warm days and cool nights, facilitates a slow, balanced aromatic ripening.
Grape Variety and Vinification
Sauvignon Blanc is the flagship variety of Sattlerhof, an estate built up by Willi and Andrea Sattler since the 1980s. Minimal intervention is the rule in the cellar: hand-selected grapes, gentle pressing, and temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel tanks. The wine proudly bears the Südsteiermark DAC appellation on the label.
On the Palate
The attack is taut and dry, underpinned by vibrant acidity. Gooseberry and white peach are complemented by a savoury edge of lemongrass and fresh herbs, enveloped in a creamy texture. The finish remains persistent and mineral-driven.
Food Pairings
Pairs wonderfully with grilled turbot with herb butter, goat's cheese, and asparagus with hollandaise sauce. It also complements Asian-spiced dishes featuring lemongrass and fresh herbs, serves beautifully as an aperitif, or matches Styrian classics such as salad with pumpkin seed oil and Backhendl (crispy fried chicken).
Key Features
Magnum from the 2020 vintage, certified organic under code number AT-BIO-402, bottled by the family-run Sattlerhof winery in Sernau near Gamlitz.
