About this wine
Character
The Serrat de la Plane is a single-varietal Grenache from ancient vines in southwestern Roussillon, combining the region's warmth with clear freshness. Georg Meissner bottles it without an appellation as a Vin de France, here in Magnum format at 1500 ml.
Terroir and origin
Serrat de la Plane means "stony plateau" in Catalan and describes the site precisely: a high plateau not far from the Spanish border, exposed to the cool wind without any shelter. The air movement cools the grapes in the hot climate and preserves freshness in the wine. Meissner took over plots here that would otherwise have been grubbed up.
Grape variety and vinification
Grenache from vines barely younger than the Carignan vines planted in 1899 on the second plot. Day-to-day management is handled by Flo Busch, with whom Meissner also shares the cellar; both work uncompromisingly biodynamically. Only two wines are produced, in tiny quantities. Bottling takes place at the Moulin de Breuil in Montesquieu-des-Albères, dry, at 14.0% vol.
On the palate
Cherry and blackberry, alongside lavender, garrigue herbs and black pepper. Juicy fruit, ripe tannins, a spicy, long finish.
Food pairing recommendations
Braised lamb with herbs of Provence, hearty stews and braised dishes, plus aged hard cheese.
Special features
The label carries the Demeter logo. Georg Meissner teaches Rudolf Steiner's methods at Geisenheim University, where he also runs an experimental vineyard directly comparing conventional, organic and biodynamic cultivation. At Alois Lageder in South Tyrol, he is responsible for viticulture, cellar management and research, and since 2015 has led the training programme of the respekt-BIODYN winegrowers' group. The large Magnum format allows the wine to mature more slowly.
