About this wine
Character
A lean, coolly built Carignan from the southwestern Roussillon. At 12.5% vol., it favours tension and clarity over power: vibrant acidity, fine-grained tannin, a long stony finish. A dry wine of inner calm with ageing potential, offered here in magnum format.
Terroir and origin
The vines stand on a terrace in the southwest of the Roussillon, not far from the Spanish border, sheltered by rocks, old stone walls, and adjoining woodland. The subsoil is weathered gneiss, lending minerality and depth. Georg Meissner took over these plots, which would otherwise have been grubbed up; they are farmed day to day by Flo Busch, with whom he also shares the cellar.
Grape variety and vinification
Single-varietal Carignan from vines planted in 1899. The vines' age keeps yields low, and the wine is made in tiny quantities and uncompromisingly biodynamic. It is bottled at Moulin de Breuil in Montesquieu-des-Albères, declared as Vin de France.
On the palate
On the nose, blackberry and black cherry, joined by the herbal notes of the garrigue and a cool stony hint. The palate stays juicy and grippy, carried by vibrant acidity and fine-grained tannin; the finish is stony and dry.
Food pairings
With braised lamb, game dishes, and aged hard cheese.
Special features
Vindemiatrix is Latin for "the grape harvester" and denotes a star in the constellation Virgo. Georg Meissner teaches Rudolf Steiner's methods at the Geisenheim University, oversees agriculture, cellar, and research at Alois Lageder, and since 2015 has been training the respekt-BIODYN winegrowers' group. The label carries the Demeter logo.
