About this wine

Character

A Gevrey-Chambertin of cool etching and quiet depth: dark cherry and wild raspberry, overlaid with violet, behind that blackcurrant, undergrowth and a hint of graphite. The 2017 vintage shows itself approachable early, without turning soft.

Terroir and origin

Les Seuvrées lies in northern Gevrey-Chambertin, at the foot of the great crus of the Côte de Nuits. The Lignier family has farmed Pinot Noir in Morey-Saint-Denis since the 1880s; Laurent Lignier runs the domaine in its fifth generation and had fully reassembled it by 2013.

Grape variety and vinification

Pinot Noir, single varietal. Since 2007 the vineyards have been farmed without synthetic inputs. The cellar in Morey-Saint-Denis, acquired in 2008, runs from must to bottling without a single pump, by gravity alone. Long, cool macerations precede fermentation; the proportion of whole clusters has grown over the years, while new oak has been deliberately scaled back and spread across four coopers so that no single barrel dominates the wine.

On the palate

Taut structure, fine-grained tannin, crisp acidity and 13.0% ABV in a dry style. The fruit remains precisely drawn through to a long, precise finish. The magnum format gives the wine additional freshness and ageing time.

Food pairings

With duck breast, partridge, saddle of lamb or beef fillet with mushrooms. Also with coq au vin, game terrine and aged Époisses.

Special features

Magnum of 1500 ml, bottled at Domaine Hubert Lignier in Morey-Saint-Denis. The estate has held organic certification since 2019.
