About this wine
Character
A village wine from Gevrey-Chambertin, grown in the Côte de Nuits and built for cool clarity. At 13.5% vol., the 2022 vintage remains lean, with fruit centred on red cherry and violet, underpinned by subtle spice. Precisely drawn, finely knit, built for length.
Terroir and origin
Gevrey-Chambertin is one of the appellations that came into the Lignier family's holdings over the decades; the cellar is based in Morey-Saint-Denis. The Ligniers have grown Pinot Noir there since the 1880s. Laurent Lignier now runs the domaine in the fifth generation, having reunified it by 2013.
Grape variety and winemaking
Pure varietal Pinot Noir. Synthetic treatments disappeared from the vineyards as early as 2007, followed by organic certification in 2019. The cellar, occupied since 2008, works entirely by gravity: from crushing to bottling, no pump touches the wine. Long, cool macerations precede fermentation, and the proportion of whole clusters has grown over the years. Laurent Lignier has deliberately scaled back new oak and spread it across four coopers, so that no single barrel dominates the wine.
On the palate
Juicy and cleanly built, with ripe red fruit, silky yet present tannin and fresh acidity. Spicy nuances and a mineral finish carry through the close.
Food pairings
Coq au vin, pink-roasted duck breast, bœuf bourguignon or beef fillet with mushrooms. With cheese, aged Comté and Époisses.
Special features
In 1973, amid a sales crisis, Hubert Lignier began bottling his wines himself instead of selling them off in bulk. What had been a mere grape supplier became an estate with its own name, now farmed organically.
