About this wine
Character
A dry Pinot Noir from old vines in Gevrey-Chambertin that shows two sides: sweet, dark fruit and spice on the one hand, a cool, chalky vein on the other, giving the wine its aristocratic edge.
Terroir and origin
The vines stand in the Climat Marchais, directly below the Clos Lavaux Saint Jacques. The cultivated 0.68 hectares are defined by limestone and clay. The estate was founded by Yann Charlopin and Justine Tissier in 2013 in Morey-Saint-Denis; today they farm a little over four hectares in the Côte de Nuits.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Pinot Noir. The grapes are destemmed, given a cool pre-fermentation maceration and fermented spontaneously. The wine then matures slowly for 18 months on fine lees in 228-litre barrels, mainly from François Frères, with a new-oak proportion of 50 to 75 percent.
On the palate
In the glass, a deep violet-red, only slightly paler towards the rim. The nose shows dark, sweet berries and black cherries, oriental spices and fine chocolate, overlaid with the cool, chalky note. On the palate this continues: sweet fruit, spice, hints of liquorice and chocolate, dry and full of charm.
Particularities
Yann Charlopin is the son of Philippe Charlopin, who worked closely with Henri Jayer; he trained with Jean-Marie Fourrier. The vineyard is worked by hand, fermentation in the cellar is spontaneous, and the wine matures slowly on fine lees. The estate's wines feature on the lists of The French Laundry, Tour d'Argent and Frenchie.
