About this wine

Character

A Savagnin that showcases the fresh, purist side of the Jura. Pale golden yellow in the glass, the nose fragrant and fresh yet also full of substance and depth: quince, green apple, lemon complete with pips and zest, along with hawthorn and a hint of tarragon.

Terroir and origin

Domaine Grand is based in Arbois and farms 9.5 hectares between Arbois and Château-Chalon. The vines grow on grey limestone as well as grey and red marl, partly with dolomitic influence; some plots are over 100 years old. Nathalie Grand runs the vineyards, and the conversion to organic farming began in 2018.

Grape variety and vinification

100% Savagnin, hand-harvested. Fermentation happened spontaneously, partly in oak barrels, partly in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. The wine was aged in used oak, which lends texture without imparting oak flavour. Emmanuel Grand is responsible for the cellar and works with minimal sulphur.

On the palate

Silky and elegant, with a richness that coats the mouth. Against this stands a juicy, lively and nervy acidity that keeps the wine in tension. Delicate, with a warming note, very good length and saline intensity; chestnut and almond on the finish. Dry, 14.0% vol.

Particularities

Nine generations since 1692: in 2015 Emmanuel and Nathalie Grand reduced the vineyard area from 24 to 9.5 hectares, fewer vineyards for greater quality. The Guide Hachette named them «Vignerons de l'année» in 2020. The labels are designed by French artist Bast, and the estate bottles around 45,000 bottles a year.
