About this wine

Character

A dry white wine that draws its character from ageing under the yeast veil. Walnut, dried herbs and curry define the profile, underpinned by a fresh, mineral vein. An oxidative style that doesn't tire the fruit but instead gains spice and tension.

Terroir and origin

Nathalie Grand tends the domaine's plots from Arbois through Passenans to the steep slopes of Château-Chalon. There, the vines grow on grey limestone as well as grey and red marl, partly with dolomitic influence. Poor, complex soils that give the Savagnin its acid structure and saline note.

Grape variety and vinification

100% Savagnin. Emmanuel Grand oversees the cellar and ages the wine in old barrels under the voile, the flor yeast layer that forms because the barrels aren't topped up for years. Sulphur use remains minimal. Bottled in the 620 ml format, 16.0% vol.

On the palate

Powerful and dry, with dense extract and vibrant freshness. The saline minerality carries the wine into a very long finish, where walnut and dried herbs linger.

Food recommendations

Classic with aged Comté. Also excellent with Bresse chicken in morel cream sauce and morel risotto, as well as spicy dishes from Indian and Vietnamese cuisine.

Special features

The Grand family has grown vines in the Jura since 1692, now in its ninth generation. In 2015, Emmanuel and Nathalie Grand reduced the vineyard area from 24 to 9.5 hectares; in 2018 conversion to organic farming began, and in 2021 the first certified cuvées reached the market. In 2020, the Guide Hachette named the couple "Vignerons de l'année", honouring a Château-Chalon Vin de Voile from the 2015 vintage. The domaine bottles around 45,000 bottles per year, with labels designed by the artist Bast.
