About this wine

Character

This wine works less through aroma than through texture and energy. The fruit is present but stays transparent, while grip, saline minerality and fine tannins set the direction. At 12.0% ABV, the GT remains light-footed; the balance of fruit, phenolics and minerality gives it ageing potential.

Terroir and origin

Pranzegg lies above Bolzano; the vineyards on the Kohlerer Berg and on the Ritten plateau face northwest, are shaded by forest and swept by cool downdraft winds. Porphyry, basalt and granite define these volcanic soils, yielding acid backbone and freshness rather than fullness.

Grape variety and vinification

Gewürztraminer, vinified dry and fermented on the skins. Fermentation proceeds spontaneously with wild yeasts, ageing takes place in concrete tanks and used oak or chestnut barrels, unfined and unfiltered, with minimal sulphur added before bottling. The preserved pergola vines shade the soil and allow ripeness without overripeness.

On the palate

First grip and structure, then a bright, stony salinity that spreads across the whole wine. Orange and mandarin nuances flash up and are promptly reabsorbed by the phenolics. The tannins from skin fermentation are well integrated and never feel rustic. The finish is long, saline and herbal.

Food pairings

Grilled octopus, duck breast with orange sauce, pumpkin risotto with sage butter and mature Taleggio.

Distinctive features

Martin and Marion Gojer have farmed biodynamically since 2009 across nearly four hectares, with Martin Gojer preparing the biodynamic preparations himself. Eight Ouessant dwarf sheep graze between the pergola vines, keeping the grass short and fertilising the soil. On these steep slopes, much of the work is done by hand, as the terraces are too narrow for machinery.
