About this wine
Character
The flagship wine of Corzano e Paterno: 100% Sangiovese, harvested from the best parcels and bottled only in exceptional vintages. The 14.5% vol. gives the wine weight, while its structure remains upright and clearly defined.
Terroir and origin
The vines grow at 300 metres above sea level on calcareous, clay-rich soils with pebbles, remnants of a former seabed. Of the estate's 140 hectares, only 17 are planted with vines; the rest belongs to 4,000 olive trees, pastureland and 600 sheep of the Sardinian breed, which graze between the rows, fertilise the soil and keep the land open.
Grape variety and vinification
Sangiovese, pure varietal. Winemaker Arianna Gelpke, in charge of the cellar since 2005, and agronomist Aljoscha Goldschmidt work organically with a great deal of manual labour: double green harvest in the vineyard, double hand harvest, double sorting of the grapes. Ageing takes place in used barriques, which lend structure without overpowering the fruit.
On the palate
In the glass, dark cherry, ripe plum and violet, followed by herbs, leather and cedarwood. The body is dense yet juicy, the tannin fine-grained, the acidity lively. The finish is long, with a mineral pull.
Food pairings
Bistecca alla Fiorentina, pappardelle with wild boar ragù, rack of lamb, duck breast and mature Pecorino Toscano.
Special features
The Gelpke-Goldschmidt family has run this mixed estate for over 50 years; alongside the wine, it produces 13 types of cheese and olive oil. The estate's annual production is 75,000 bottles.
