About this wine
Character
After nearly two decades of bottle age, this Federspiel shows the crystalline clarity that is the hallmark of Nikolaihof: 12.0% vol., lean build, filigree structure. Elegance over concentration.
Terroir and origin
The Im Weingebirge vineyard in Mautern is considered Europe's first documented vineyard, recorded since the year 470 AD. The estate stands on the foundations of the Roman fort of Favianis, dating from 63 BC. The Saahs family's 22 hectares have been farmed biodynamically to Demeter standards since 1971; wild herbs grow between the vines, and emerald lizards bask on the stone terraces.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Grüner Veltliner in the Wachau's Federspiel category. Pressing takes place in the Roman vaulted cellar using a 350-year-old tree press, and the must ferments spontaneously in a large Slavonian oak cask. Nikolaus Saahs Jr. continues this method of working.
On the palate
Dry and lean, with ripe pear, quince and chamomile, alongside the variety's characteristic white pepper. The acidity, softened by age, remains lively and carries through to a long, saline, chalky finish.
Food pairings
With Wiener schnitzel, trout in almond butter, asparagus with hollandaise sauce or boiled beef with apple horseradish, as well as with aged mountain cheese.
Special features
Released as an Archive Release in 2024, this magnum came onto the market straight from the estate's cellar. Nikolaihof has been Demeter-certified since 1971 and is considered the oldest Demeter estate in the world; the Saahs family has farmed the site since 1894.
