About this wine
Character
A Grüner Veltliner of the Wachau's Smaragd quality tier, dry, from a magnum bottle and aged at the estate for over a decade before leaving the cellar in 2024 as an Archive Release. At 12.5% vol., it remains wine-driven, round and highly concentrated without ever becoming heavy.
Terroir and origin
The Im Weingebirge vineyard is a vineyard within a vineyard: it belongs to the Alte Point and borders the Strudel and Süssenberg vineyards above Mautern. Six hectares climbing the slope northward from 206 to 225 metres. The subsoil is paragneiss, which breaks through to the surface in places, overlaid with loam and, above all, loess. The vineyard is considered the first in Europe recorded in written documents, attested since the year 470 AD.
Grape variety and vinification
Grüner Veltliner, spontaneously fermented and aged in large Slavonian oak casks. In the Roman vaulted cellar, a 350-year-old tree press is still in use, and the wines are given time — some a decade or more.
On the palate
Mature dandelion yellow in the glass. The nose shows ripe Boskop apple, Williams pear and quince, alongside nutmeg, dried oregano and dried marjoram, plus a lightly smoky nuance reminiscent of oxtail. The taste comes across as malty and slightly sweet, leaving room for a restrained acidity to play; the aromatics overlay it somewhat, making the wine broader and more voluminous. The spicy finish carries through to the very last drop.
Distinctive features
Nikolaihof stands on Roman foundations dating back to 63 BC and has been run by the Saahs family since 1894, biodynamic under Demeter certification since 1971. It is considered the oldest Demeter estate in the world and the only certified biodynamic producer in the Wachau.
