About this wine

Character

A Grüner Veltliner that shows its age and conceals nothing: ripe dandelion yellow in the glass, vinous, round, and highly concentrated. The aromatic profile has shifted from fruit towards spice, while the acidity remains subtly in the background.

Terroir and Origin

The Ried Im Weingebirge vineyard lies above Mautern, belongs to the Ried Alte Point, and borders the Strudel and Süssenberg vineyards. It encompasses six hectares and climbs the north-facing slope from 206 to 225 metres. The subsoil consists of paragneiss, which breaks through to the surface in places, covered by loam and primarily loess. The vineyard is regarded as the first documented vineyard in Europe, with records dating back to 470 AD.

Grape Variety and Vinification

Grüner Veltliner from biodynamic cultivation; Nikolaihof has operated in accordance with Demeter standards since 1971. The musts ferment spontaneously in large Slavonian oak casks within the Roman vaulted cellar and are pressed using a 350-year-old wooden beam press. This vintage was only brought to market in 2024 as an Archive Release, with 12.5% ABV.

On the Palate

On the nose, ripe Boskoop apple, Williams pear, and quince, alongside nutmeg, dried oregano, and marjoram. The palate feels malty and sweet-toned, broadly and volumptuously structured, allowing the subtle acidity room to play. The finish remains spicy and lasts long.

Food Pairings

Pairs with braised oxtail, roasted pheasant, and richly spiced sweetbreads.

Distinctive Features

The estate stands on the foundations of the Roman fort Favianis from 63 BC and has been owned by the Saahs family since 1894. It was Austria's first Demeter-certified winery and remains the only certified biodynamic producer in the Wachau to this day. Nikolaus Saahs Jr. focuses on moderate alcohol levels and extended maturation in large oak casks.
