About this wine

Character

This dry Riesling brings together exotic richness and cool precision. In the glass, a brilliant golden yellow with distinct green highlights, overall multifaceted and lively, at 12.5% ABV. A wine with very good aging potential: it already shows beautifully now and will become even more layered and exciting with a little bottle age.

Terroir and origin

This wine comes from the Roter Hang in Nierstein, arguably the most renowned wine village of the Rhine terrace, where a large share of the estate's vineyards are located. Weathered Rotliegend soil gives the wines here a smoky minerality. In 2006, this Riesling reclaimed the village name, as Carolin and H.O. Spanier believe in a "genius loci" of Nierstein that can express itself in the wine.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure Riesling. Kühling-Gillot has worked biodynamically since 2005, regularly applying preparations 500 and 501, with lunar phases setting the rhythm of vineyard work. In the cellar, spontaneous fermentation in large wooden casks and steel tanks, minimal sulphur, no fining agents: guiding rather than correcting.

On the palate

On the nose, ripe yellow fruit of peach, apricot and mango, underscored by a stony, smoky character. On the palate, the Riesling is playful, juicy, demanding and pronounced, invigorating and full of expression, with a minerality that carries through to the finish.

Special features

A benchmark for the Roter Hang in Nierstein: Kühling-Gillot farms the steep sites of Pettenthal, Hipping, Ölberg and Rothenberg there, and this wine carries the VDP.Erste Lage classification.
