About this wine

Character

The Riesling Nackenheim Rothenberg GG "wurzelecht" 2021 is a dry Grosses Gewächs from Rheinhessen that works not through richness, but through tension, austerity and smoky depth. At 12.5% vol. it remains slender in build, with fine, silky texture and the calm of a wine with years ahead of it.

Terroir and origin

The grapes grow in the "Kapellchen" plot within Nackenheim's Rothenberg, a site on the Roter Hang between Nierstein and Nackenheim. Weathered Rotliegend gives the wines here their smoky minerality. The vines on this parcel were planted in 1934 and stand ungrafted, without the usual American rootstock: they survived phylloxera. Hans Oliver Spanier calls this parcel the DNA of German Riesling.

Grape variety and vinification

100% Riesling from biodynamic farming, practised by the estate since 2005. Preparations 500 and 501 are used regularly, with lunar phases setting the rhythm of the vineyard work. In the cellar, spontaneous fermentation in large wooden casks and steel tanks, minimal use of sulphur, no fining agents.

On the palate

Ripe lemon and yellow peach, alongside fine herbs and a smoky, saline minerality. The wine stays cool, the acidity fine-grained, the texture powerful and dense.

Food pairings

Pan-seared turbot with truffle foam, Bresse pigeon, or a mature Comté.

Special features

The 2018 vintage of the Rothenberg GG "wurzelecht" was awarded 100 points by Gault & Millau as Germany's best dry Riesling. Kühling-Gillot and Battenfeld-Spanier run two VDP estates under a shared biodynamic signature.
