About this wine
Character
A darkly spiced, extract-rich Riesling with a very fine reduction. It smells of smoke, salted lemon, crushed flint, a touch of petrichor, herbs, mustard seed and pink pepper. A dramatic, almost brooding opening, repeatedly pierced by bright flashes of light.
Terroir and origin
The parcel lies in the northernmost corner of the Roter Hang, a steep stretch that borders directly on the Pettenthal and is enclosed by a small wall. In this «Kapellchen» parcel within the Nackenheim Rothenberg, weathered Rotliegend outcrops, giving the Rieslings here their smoky minerality.
Grape variety and vinification
Riesling from vines planted in 1934, ungrafted and without the usual American rootstock. Kühling-Gillot has farmed biodynamically since 2005: preparations 500 and 501 are used regularly, and lunar phases set the rhythm of the vineyard work. In the cellar, spontaneous fermentation in large wooden casks and steel tanks, minimal use of sulphur, no fining agents.
On the palate
Also darkly spiced and extract-rich on the palate, with plenty of dark stone, grip and firmness: black berries, lemon and zest, graphite, salt, yeast and herbs. The wine is elegant while building considerable pressure, pushing forward, staying taut and reserved, and still needs time.
Special features
The vines survived phylloxera and still stand on their own roots today. Hans Oliver Spanier calls this parcel «the DNA of German Riesling». The 2018 vintage of this wine was awarded 100 points by Gault & Millau as Germany's best dry Riesling.
