About this wine

Character

A Priorat from old vines that stays cool and lithe: dark fruit, earthy depth, and beneath it a taut, slaty line. The 14.5% Vol. never pushes forward — the wine's energy comes from acidity and minerality.

Terroir and origin

Familia Nin Ortiz farms steep vineyards around Porrera, some at altitudes of up to 700 metres. The soil is Llicorella, the black slate of the Priorat, which gives the wines their cool minerality. The slopes are too steep for machinery, so Carles Ortiz ploughs with mules, something no one in Porrera had done since the 1960s.

Grape variety and winemaking

Grenache and Carignan from old vines, hence the designation Velles Vinyes. Fermentation is spontaneous, in foudres, demi-muids or amphorae, and the wine is bottled without fining or filtration. Ester Nin, an oenologist trained in Tarragona, and Carles Ortiz have worked strictly biodynamically since their first vintage together in 2008.

On the palate

Juicy blackberry and black cherry, joined by fine herbs and an earthy note. The tannin is fine-grained, the acidity vibrant, the finish long and marked by minerality.

Food pairings

Rack of lamb with rosemary and braised wild boar, as well as grilled octopus with paprika and olive oil. For a meat-free option, try braised aubergines with tomatoes and olives or escalivada, the Catalan roasted vegetable dish; to finish, an aged Manchego.

Special features

Every cork from the estate bears the phrase "Biodynamic since day one." Familia Nin Ortiz is one of the few Spanish estates in La Renaissance des Appellations, the association founded by Nicolas Joly.
