About this wine
Character
A powerful Priorat that combines dark fruit with pure minerality. In the glass, deep purple with a violet rim and opaque core. The nose is deep and, despite the wine's youth, generous: lingonberry and cranberry, alongside dried and stewed black cherry, the spice of black tea, delicately smoked duck breast, cocoa bean and a hint of amaretto.
Terroir and origin
In 1989, Álvaro Palacios and René Barbier persuaded their friend Daphne Glorian to put her savings into old Garnacha vines on seventeen terraces near Gratallops. That is how Clos i Terrasses came to be. At the time, Priorat lay in a state of quiet dormancy, and only a few recognised the potential of its slate terraces. The grapes for Laurel come from the Aubagues and Socarrats sites, added later.
Grape variety and vinification
The cuvée is composed mainly of Grenache Noir, complemented by Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine is aged in used oak and in amphorae, which stand in the cellar alongside concrete vats, barriques and foudres. Since 2004, Daphne Glorian has farmed the vines biodynamically, supported by Ester Nin. 14.0% vol., dry.
On the palate
Rich in dark-berry fruit and resolutely dry. A lively acidity gives the tannin-rich body freedom of movement and sure footing, while time and air bring its still-untamed power into balanced calm. So open and decant well in advance.
Food pairing suggestions
Braised veal shoulder with grilled Brussels sprouts and potato gratin, grilled lamb merguez with mojo rosso and sweet potato fries, or chestnut spätzle with roasted pumpkin and melted crispy onions.
Special features
1.5-litre magnum. Laurel is the English translation of Daphne; the estate's second wine thus carries its creator's first name.
