About this wine

Character

An orange wine that places spice and earthiness above fruit. The nose shows peach and mandarin peel along with their bitter, fresh skin, followed by forest floor, undergrowth, cedarwood and light tobacco leaves. Smoky notes recall woodsmoke. Pepper, juniper, rosemary and sage keep the spice in balance.

Terroir and origin

Le Masse is located in Barberino Val d'Elsa in Chianti Classico. Paolo Mugnaini bought the estate in the 1950s; today Robin Mugnaini runs the family winery with 20 hectares of vines and 6000 olive trees. He has worked biodynamically since 2015, and the estate has been organic-certified since 2020. Annual production is 18,000 to 25,000 bottles.

Grape variety and vinification

100 percent Trebbiano, hand-harvested. Fermentation takes place in 800-litre terracotta amphorae, using exclusively natural yeasts from the vineyard and without temperature control. After two months of fermentation and maceration on the skins, the wine is racked off, then matures for a further six months in the same amphorae and at least four months in bottle.

On the palate

The entry is powerful and juicy, while the wine also feels refreshing and austere. The acidity is structured and well integrated, driving the wine forward. Both sides return in the finish: the austere, intense fruit and the spicy depth.

Special features

The amphorae come from sculptor Lorenzo Vignoli, with whom Robin Mugnaini collaborates. The cellar also houses large wooden casks and concrete vessels, and work is done without pumps. The estate's labels are designed by painter Christiane Mugnaini.
