About this wine

Character

A red wine that combines restraint and drive. In the glass, a slightly translucent ruby red with garnet reflections, on the nose ripe black cherries, plums and blackberries, followed by undergrowth, warm forest floor and vineyard soil. Black olives, crushed cherry stones and a sweet yeast note give the bouquet its charm.

Terroir and origin

The grapes come from Barberino Val d'Elsa (Barberino Tavarnelle), from a vineyard planted in 1961 at 320 metres above sea level, with soils of sand and clay. Robin Mugnaini runs the family estate Le Masse with 20 hectares of vines and 6000 olive trees, and has been working biodynamically since 2015: preparation 500 in the vineyard, lunar calendar in the cellar, pragmatic rather than dogmatic.

Grape variety and vinification

100% Canaiolo, a Tuscan variety already mentioned in 1303 and today used almost exclusively as a blending partner. Hand-harvested in late September, destemmed, fermentation with native yeasts, followed by 35 to 40 days of maceration on the skins in a 5-hl steel tank, without temperature control, without sulphur and without pumping over. The Timeo was aged for one year in steel tank.

On the palate

Ripe and red-fruited, silky in texture, the acidity ripe and vibrant, the flow juicy. At 12.0% vol., the wine remains dry and clearly defined, with the structure carrying the sweet fruit.

Food pairing recommendations

Focaccia with rosemary and prosciutto, tagliatelle with wild boar ragù or pasta primavera with spring vegetables and pecorino.

Special features

The Timeo is named after Robin Mugnaini's son. Single-varietal Canaiolo has become rare, and vinification without sulphur, pumps or temperature control makes it a hand-crafted piece. The estate bottles between 18,000 and 25,000 bottles annually.
