About this wine

Character

The Maustal Silvaner Grosses Gewächs 2023 is a dry Silvaner from Franconia, grown on a steep site south of Sulzfeld am Main. It combines density and concentration with a balance already evident on the nose: delicate fruit, floral notes, a only faintly stony hint of lichen on damp stone, alongside nutty and tobacco-like notes, a touch of curry and root vegetables over a very fine sweetness.

Terroir and origin

The Maustal south of Sulzfeld is a four-hectare vineyard facing south and south-east, a steep slope above the Main river and a VDP.Grosse Lage. The subsoil consists of sparse, skeletal Upper Muschelkalk limestone.

Grape variety and vinification

The site is planted with Yellow Silvaner, not Green. The vines date from 1962 and 1963 and are the estate's oldest self-planted vines. Grapes are hand-harvested and destemmed, with an extended period of skin contact before spontaneous fermentation. Ageing takes place in the classic double barrel of Spessart oak. 13.5% vol., dry.

On the palate

Medium straw yellow in the glass. Elegant acidity and a silky texture carry yellow pepper, white-fleshed fruit and citrus, accompanied by fine mineral energy. Spice and herbaceous notes follow, along with the return of tobacco and nutty nuances.

Distinctive features

Wolfgang and Ulrich Luckert are the only winery in the world to cultivate all four colour variants of Silvaner: green, yellow, red and blue. The Zehnthof Luckert estate in Sulzfeld has been a VDP member since 1955, and cellar master Philipp Luckert works consistently with natural yeasts. VINUM named the estate Winery of the Year 2025.
