About this wine
Character
A Silvaner that puts terroir ahead of fruit. Salt dough, chalk and fine yeast lay a creamy, doughy foundation, while the yellow fruit stays restrained, almost shy: grilled pineapple, ripe peach, juicy Conference pear, a hint of green mango. Allspice, caraway, anise, coriander seed and fennel add balsamic, spicy depth, while corn and yellow carrot bring an earthy, vegetal note, topped with a fine hint of smoke.
Terroir and origin
The Sulzfelder Sonnenberg is a VDP.Erste Lage grand cru vineyard. The parcels face south and sit on upper shell limestone with yellow-weathered limestone bands, which give the wine its Gelbkalk addition.
Grape variety and vinification
Silvaner from vines aged 44 to 52 years, with a yield of 50 hl/ha. Fermentation occurs spontaneously, ageing takes place traditionally in a large wooden barrel. Franconian dry style with 1.1 g/l residual sugar, against a high 5.8 g/l acidity for a Silvaner, 12.5% ABV.
On the palate
Energy and precision: the structure is powerful, taut, charged with tension. The wine opens with a fine richness that the acidity quickly cuts through, an interplay of creaminess and linearity. With every sip, the saline, chalky texture gains presence, the yeast remains subtly perceptible, with coriander seed and a touch of anise lingering long on the finish.
