About this wine

Character

A Blaufränkisch whose substance comes from minuscule yields: the vines in Lutzmannsburg are 50 to 110 years old and bear correspondingly little fruit. The wine shows black cherry and wet limestone, alongside the salty minerality of the iron-rich soils.

Terroir and origin

Lutzmannsburg lies in Burgenland, where the vines are rooted in a prehistoric volcano. Its iron-rich soils give the Blaufränkisch an unmistakable minerality. The individual vineyard sites differ greatly: the steep, calcareous Kirchberg, the Schwemmer, and the clay-rich Maissner plateau. In total, Moric farms 22.5 hectares.

Grape variety and vinification

Blaufränkisch, also known as Lemberger, from old vines under biodynamic cultivation. Fermentation occurs spontaneously in open wooden vats, the must remains on the skins for 22 days, after which the wine matures for 20 months on fine lees in large, used wood. It is bottled unfined and unfiltered.

On the palate

Vinified dry, at 14.0% vol. The fruit appears taut, the tannin is fine-grained, the finish salty and marked by limestone.

Special features

Roland Velich, formerly a ski instructor and croupier, founded Moric in 2001 and built the estate around ancient Blaufränkisch vines in Lutzmannsburg and Neckenmarkt. James Suckling ranks Moric among the world's best nine wineries, and Falstaff named Velich Winemaker of the Year in 2023. Bottled by: Weingut Moric, Kirchengasse 3, Grosshöflein.
