About this wine

Character

The Lutzmannsburg Ried Schwemmer 2022 showcases the Blaufränkisch that Roland Velich has championed since founding Moric in 2001: cool, clear, and built on origin rather than sheer power. In Burgenland, where opulence was long the benchmark, Velich seeks Burgundian elegance and treats Blaufränkisch accordingly.

Terroir and Origin

Ried Schwemmer is a single vineyard site in Lutzmannsburg. The vines take root on a prehistoric volcano; the iron-rich soils lend this Blaufränkisch its distinctive minerality. Many of the vines are 50 to 110 years old, dating back to an era before the variety was cultivated for high yields. They yield tiny quantities of highly concentrated fruit. The estate cultivates a total of 22.5 hectares.

Grape Variety and Vinification

Blaufränkisch, also known as Lemberger in Germany. The grapes ferment spontaneously in open wooden vats, with 22 days of maceration. The wine then matures for 20 months on the fine lees in large, used oak casks; no new barriques are used. Bottled without fining or filtration. The vineyards are farmed biodynamically. 13.5% ABV, dry.

On the Palate

Dark cherry, blackberry, and blueberry, joined by violet and clove. The acidity keeps the wine lively, the tannins are fine-grained, and the finish is long and spicy with a lingering mineral nuance.

Food Pairings

Pairs wonderfully with braised shoulder of lamb with herbs, saddle of venison, and wild boar goulash, as well as braised beef dishes and mature mountain cheese.

Special Features

Falstaff named Roland Velich Winemaker of the Year in 2023.
