About this wine
Character
This Furmint is a purist: it speaks in stone, herb and nut rather than fruit. In the glass, a pale straw yellow with green reflections; on the nose, freshly chopped almond and a touch of marzipan, followed by baked apple and caramelised pear. Beneath lies a chalky to limestone streak that keeps the entire aromatic profile cool.
Terroir and Origin
The wine comes from Tokaj, Hungary's historic wine region. Roland Velich, who founded Moric in 2001, seeks cross-border collaboration with Hungarian winemakers through the Hidden Treasures series. Number one was created with Gergö Filep.
Grape Variety and Vinification
Single-varietal Furmint, the region's traditional grape, vinified dry and kept at a restrained 12.5% ABV. The herbal dimension defines it more than the fruit: savory, marjoram, sage and thyme, complemented by beeswax, honey candle, acacia honey and fennel pollen.
On the Palate
Lively and yet completely unruffled. Medium pressure, delicate melting texture, providing space for the honeyed aromatics to unfold. The wine has no sweetness whatsoever; the nectar notes remain purely aromatic. The chalky, austere impression carries through to the finish, where dried herbs and a nutty note linger.
Special Features
Hidden Treasures is Velich's project beyond the borders of Burgenland, in which he collaborates with Hungarian winemakers. Falstaff named him Winemaker of the Year in 2023.
