About this wine

Character

A red wine of great density that carries its power without fanfare. The fruit is dark and concentrated, the tannins are polished, and the acidity keeps everything in motion. Young, it still appears reserved and gains complexity over the years.

Terroir and origin

The vines grow in Lutzmannsburg in Burgenland, on a prehistoric volcano whose iron-rich soils give the Blaufränkisch its minerality. The single vineyards Kirchberg, Schwemmer and Maissner are structured quite differently: the steep, limestone-rich Kirchberg on one side, the clay-rich Maissner plateau on the other. Many vines are 50 to 110 years old and yield tiny crops.

Grape variety and vinification

Blaufränkisch, single-varietal. Spontaneous fermentation in open wooden vats, 22 days of maceration, followed by 20 months of aging on fine lees in large, used wood. Neither fined nor filtered. Roland Velich farms the vineyards biodynamically and deliberately holds back in the cellar.

On the palate

Deep black-red with faint violet hues toward the rim. On the nose, cassis and dark berries, along with toasted notes, cocoa, a hint of peat and fine leather, with air also noble tobacco and Kampot pepper. On the palate, dense fruit over a mineral base, juicy, with fine acidity and a long finish. 13.5% vol., dry.

Food pairings

Salsify with truffle and Brussels sprouts, smoked pork belly with dumplings filled with dried plum, or Kobe beef with Madagascar pepper, star anise and Swiss chard-potato gratin.

Special features

Roland Velich set out on his own path with Moric in 2001 and today farms 22.5 hectares of vineyards; Falstaff named him Winemaker of the Year in 2023. The 1500 ml magnum is the format for long-term aging.
