About this wine
Character
A Blaufränkisch that places origin above fruit. Power and concentration meet a cool, taut line; the wine builds vertically rather than broadly. Tension and finesse define its character, not power.
Terroir and origin
Lutzmannsburg sits atop a prehistoric volcano, whose iron-rich soils lend the Blaufränkisch its minerality. The vines behind this wine are 50 to 110 years old, dating from an era before Blaufränkisch was bred for yield: tiny crops, concentrated grapes. Moric farms 22.5 hectares biodynamically.
Grape variety and vinification
Single-varietal Blaufränkisch. Spontaneous fermentation in open wooden vats, 22 days of maceration, followed by 20 months of ageing on fine lees in large, used wood. Neither fined nor filtered. 13.5% vol., dry.
On the palate
The nose is deep and spicy: morello cherry, sweet cherry, blackberry and blackcurrant over thyme, rosemary and bay leaf, followed by black olive, juniper and black pepper, and later mint, eucalyptus, pistachio and almond. On the palate the fruit remains present but defers to the spice and stony minerality. Subtle umami notes, great length, a saline, almost weightless finish that points to long ageing potential.
Food pairings
Saddle of lamb with Provençal herbs, game birds such as pigeon or partridge, and spicy mushroom dishes.
Special features
Roland Velich, formerly a ski instructor and croupier, founded Moric in 2001 and works in the cellar with radical restraint. Falstaff named him Winemaker of the Year in 2023, and James Suckling ranked Moric among the world's nine best wineries.
