About this wine
Character
Cool elegance instead of opulence: Roland Velich vinifies Blaufränkisch with a Burgundian approach, and the Lutzmannsburg Ried Kirchberg 2021 displays this through its polished structure, fine tannins, and a mineral vein that holds the wine together.
Terroir and Origin
Ried Kirchberg is located in Lutzmannsburg in Burgenland. The slope is steep and calcareous, underlain by the legacy of a prehistoric volcano with iron-rich soils that impart a stony minerality to the Blaufränkisch. Many of Moric's vines are between 50 and 110 years old, planted at a time when the variety was not yet bred for yield. They bear low yields and deliver concentrated fruit.
Grape Variety and Vinification
Single-varietal Blaufränkisch from biodynamic farming. The grapes ferment spontaneously in open wooden vats, after which the wine matures for 20 months on the fine lees in large, used oak casks. It is bottled without fining or filtration to ensure an unadulterated expression of the terroir.
On the Palate
Dense ruby red with garnet reflections in the glass. The nose reveals dark morello cherries and black cherries, underlaid with damp limestone. The attack is dry and taut, the tannins finely woven, the finish cool and mineral. 13.5% ABV.
Food Pairings
Pairs wonderfully with medium-rare saddle of venison, braised beef cheeks, or braised leg of lamb. Equally magnificent with porcini risotto and other herb-infused mushroom dishes.
Special Features
Roland Velich founded Moric in 2001 and has since worked with old Blaufränkisch vines from Lutzmannsburg and Neckenmarkt. Falstaff named him Winemaker of the Year in 2023.
