About this wine

Character

The Lutzmannsburg Ried Maissner 2021 is a dry Blaufränkisch from Burgenland at 13.0% vol. Roland Velich founded Moric in 2001 and has since sought finesse over opulence. The Maissner shows cool structure, a mineral imprint and fruit free of any over-ripeness.

Terroir and origin

The Ried Maissner lies in Lutzmannsburg, where the vines are rooted in a prehistoric volcano. The iron-rich soils give the Blaufränkisch its minerality, while the plateau itself is rich in clay. Many vines have stood there for 50 to 110 years, dating back to a time when Blaufränkisch had not yet been bred for yield. Their tiny yields produce concentrated wines of great complexity.

Grape variety and vinification

Blaufränkisch, spontaneously fermented in open wooden vats, 22 days on the skins. This is followed by 20 months of ageing on fine lees in large, used wood. Neither fined nor filtered. The vineyards are farmed biodynamically, and in the cellar Velich holds back radically.

On the palate

Deep ruby red in the glass with violet reflections. The wine tastes of black cherries and dark berries, alongside wet limestone, herbs and spices. The acidity is pronounced, the tannins fine-grained, and the finish stays long and mineral.

Food recommendations

Game such as roe deer and venison, roast duck or beef fillet. Also mushroom dishes and aged hard cheese.

Special features

Moric farms 22.5 hectares in Lutzmannsburg and Neckenmarkt. Falstaff named Roland Velich Winemaker of the Year in 2023.
