About this wine
Character
The Mâcon-Vinzelles "Le Clos de Grand-Père" 2024 is a youthful, refreshing Chardonnay from southern Burgundy, at once refined and fruity. Oak influence stays in the background, 12.5% vol. keeps the wine lean, and it is vinified dry.
Terroir and origin
The Mâcon-Vinzelles appellation lies in the southern Mâconnais. The wine is a blend of various clay-limestone terroirs. It takes its name from the walled Clos de Grand-Père, which Jules Bret acquired in 1947 with one hectare and which remains to this day the heart of Domaine La Soufrandière. Since 2000 his grandsons Jean-Philippe and Jean-Guillaume Bret have run the estate, joined by Marc-Antoine in 2010.
Grape variety and vinification
100% Chardonnay, harvested from 12 to 23 September. Ageing takes place 70% in steel tank and 30% in barrique. In the cellar the brothers hold back: spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts, extended lees ageing for texture, bottled unfiltered and only minimally sulphured.
On the palate
On the nose, apple, lemon, quince and grapefruit zest, alongside shellfish, sea breeze, linden blossom and aniseed; from the barrel only a hint of vanilla and cedarwood. The wine is best enjoyed young for now: lively acidity, fine light fruit, saline notes and a subtle tannin that gives it grip. Decanting and further bottle age will pay off.
Special features
Since 2003 La Soufrandière has been organically certified by Ecocert, and since 2006 biodynamically certified by Demeter; the Demeter logo appears on the label. The estate works with horn manure and horn silica preparations, and part of the vineyards are worked with horses. From the 2024 vintage there are 8,214 bottles and 480 magnums.
