About this wine
Character
Sophie belongs to Manincor's Herz line, the estate's single-vineyard wines from Kaltern, and is built around Chardonnay. Ageing in wood lends it toasty spice and grip without masking the fruit: open-hearted, inviting, already hedonistic in its youth.
Terroir and origin
The grapes come in equal parts from two vineyard sites. Lieben Aich in Terlan is a warm, west-facing hillside at 300 metres; Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc grow there on loamy sandy soil interspersed with weathered porphyry rock. Mazzon in Kaltern, with a gradient of up to 100%, is Manincor's steepest vineyard, south-west facing at 350 to 400 metres over lime-rich loamy subsoil; Chardonnay and Viognier grow here.
Grape variety and vinification
94% Chardonnay, 4% Viognier, 2% Sauvignon Blanc. Hand-harvested in early September, followed by four hours of skin contact in the press to release aroma and structure. Fermentation proceeded spontaneously with the grapes' own yeasts in wooden vessels of varying sizes, followed by nine months of ageing on the fine lees.
On the palate
On the nose, toasted hazelnuts, apricot, orange zest, acacia and linden blossom, underscored by wet stone and quince in brown butter. The entry shows delicate creaminess and a faint beeswax-like sweetness of extract, the texture stays silky, the fruit precisely framed by the oak. Subtly saline notes and a nutty finish, dry at 13.5% vol. Three to five years of bottle age will bring the wine further along.
Distinctive features
Michael Graf Goëss-Enzenberg took over Manincor in 1991 and converted to biodynamic farming in 2005, with the first fully biodynamic vintage following in 2006. Chickens, sheep and bees are part of the estate, and herbal teas replace synthetic sprays. The cellar is built into the hillside and works by gravity rather than pumps. Bottled in magnum with 1500 millilitres.
