About this wine
Character
A wine you like from the very first moment. That's down to the oak treatment, which suits the gently extracted fruit perfectly: ripe raspberries and wild strawberries, alongside violet blossoms, a touch of bitumen, raspberry clafoutis, a little vanilla and a hint of cinnamon. The colour is a deep yet fairly transparent purple.
Terroir and origin
La Fussière covers 41.86 hectares and lies in the northeast of the commune, directly on the border with Santenay. The site produces plenty of fruit and pronounced tannin, which is why extraction should be kept in check here. Together with his wife Sylvie, Thomas Morey farms 13 hectares across seven villages of the Côte de Beaune; his own estate in Chassagne-Montrachet has existed since 2007.
Grape variety and vinification
Pinot Noir, largely destemmed. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts in a combination of neutral barrel and tank, with malolactic fermentation occurring naturally. The proportion of new oak is around 20%. Sulphur is added only in the last six months in barrel, in several minimal doses, so the wine never exceeds 35 mg/l in total. 13.5% vol., dry.
On the palate
Plenty of energy and an enticing juiciness of ripe yet crisp red and dark berries. The wine combines the traits of a warm terroir with a cool, fresh acidity, remaining pleasantly lean yet full and juicy. This is underpinned by a perceptible, fine-grained tannin. Lively, rather blue-toned, flavourful.
Special features
Thomas Morey represents the tenth generation of a family rooted in Chassagne-Montrachet since 1643. The conversion to organic farming began in 2011, with organic certification following in 2017. No sulphur is used during fermentation, which is exclusively spontaneous.
