About this wine
Character
A grand cru of cool precision: dark cherry, undergrowth, and a precise, taut line. The 2023 reveals little in youth and gains depth with air; in magnum format it evolves especially slowly.
Terroir and origin
The vineyard belongs to the band of grands crus of Gevrey-Chambertin. The estate is based in Morey-Saint-Denis, where the Lignier family has farmed Pinot Noir since the 1880s; today Laurent Lignier runs the estate in its fifth generation. No synthetic treatments have been used in the vineyards since 2007.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Pinot Noir, vinified dry, 14.5% vol. Long, cool maceration periods precede fermentation, and the proportion of whole clusters has grown over the years. The cellar, acquired in 2008, works solely by gravity, with no pump moving the wine. New oak is deliberately restrained and spread across four cooperages, so that no single barrel dominates the wine.
On the palate
Dense and powerful, with fine-grained tannin and taut acidity. Black berry fruit and violet, along with fine spice and a smoky minerality; the finish remains long and precise.
Food pairings
Saddle of venison with cranberries, pigeon breast, or duck with lentils. A porcini risotto or a piece of Comté also pairs well with this cool fruit.
Special features
An estate that has bottled its own wines since 1973 and which Laurent Lignier succeeded in reuniting by 2013. The magnum format gives this young vintage extra time.
