Acrollam – Mallorca written backwards. A play on words that reveals much about
Mesquida Mora: here, the island is reimagined. Bàrbara Mesquida Mora launched her own project in 2012, after having run her great-grandfather's family estate. Across 20 hectares, fresh, elegant wines are produced – Demeter-certified since 2007, as one of the first biodynamic wineries in Spain. The native varieties Callet, Prensal and Gorgollassa take centre stage.
Mallorca spelled backwards
The wine names at Mesquida Mora carry meaning.
Acrollam is an anagram of Mallorca.
Sòtil means "roof" in Catalan and
Trispol means "floor", both of which Bàrbara lacked when she started from scratch in 2012. And
Sincronia? Synchronicity, the principle by which she lives and works. "Vi i vida són una sola cosa," she says: wine and life are one.
Son Porquer: the mill among the vines
Mallorca's oldest biodynamically farmed vineyard lies near Porreres. In the middle of the vine rows of
Son Porquer stands a historic mill, the emblem of the estate. This is where the grapes grow for the
Sòtil, an ethereal red wine from
Callet that shows how delicate this native variety can be. In the d'Es Pou de Sa Carrera parcel near Felanitx stand
80-year-old Callet vines, whose concentrated grapes go into the more powerful
Gorgollassa d'es Monjos.
Biodynamics by the stars
The estate has been
Demeter-certified since 2007, one of the first in Spain, long before biodynamics became a trend.
Recaredo in Penedès is another of these early pioneers. Bàrbara carries out all work according to the
lunar calendar and uses biodynamic composts and medicinal plant preparations. More than 100 fruit trees have been planted to encourage biodiversity. In the cellar: spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts,
minimal sulphur, no fining. The wines ferment slowly and mature without haste.
Seven wines for seven days
"One for every day" is how Bàrbara describes her range. The
Sincronia line (Blanc, Rosat and Negre) offers uncomplicated drinkability with Mediterranean character. Above it, the
Acrollam Blanc, from the rare varieties Prensal and Giró, shows the aromatic depth of old vines: yellow fruit, anise, herbs. The
Sincronia Negre favours elegance over extraction, a translucent ruby Callet blend with deep blackberry, cherry and gluggable freshness. At the top are the single-vineyard wines Sòtil and Gorgollassa: precise, long-lived and unmistakably Mallorcan.
