About this wine
Character
The Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru "Vieilles Vignes" 2019 is a Pinot Noir of cool precision from the old vines of Domaine Hubert Lignier. The old vines lend it density, yet its profile stays lean: cool cherry, fine spice, a calm finish. Concentration that needs no weight.
Terroir and origin
Morey-Saint-Denis in the Côte de Nuits: the Lignier family has been growing Pinot Noir here since the 1880s, and today Laurent Lignier runs the estate in its fifth generation. Hubert Lignier took over in 1959 and, in 1973, began bottling the wines himself rather than selling them in bulk to the trade. In the climat of Monts Luisants, at the upper edge of Clos de la Roche, stand twenty-seven rows of vines planted by Henri Lignier in 1955; from their wood he propagated the remaining parcels during the 1960s, vine by vine. Old vines tend towards millerandage, producing tiny, often seedless berries of remarkable concentration.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Pinot Noir. Synthetic treatments have been absent from the vineyards since 2007. The cellar, built in 2008, relies on gravity alone — from the vat to the bottle, no pump touches the wine. Long, cool maceration periods precede fermentation, and the proportion of whole clusters has grown over the years. New oak is deliberately scaled back and spread across four cooperages, so that no single barrel dominates the wine.
On the palate
Cherry, raspberry and blackcurrant stay cool, joined by floral notes, fine spice and a touch of undergrowth. The tannin is fine-grained and dense, the acidity lively, the 14.0% vol. well integrated. The finish is long and clear.
Distinctive features
Fifth generation on the same land: after Romain Lignier's death in 2004, at just 34 years old, Laurent Lignier brought the domaine back together through 2013, without ever losing the house's signature style.
