About this wine
Character
A Pinot Noir built on clarity: precise, finely structured, with fine-grained tannin and a long finish. The old vines behind the "Vieilles Vignes" designation yield small quantities and concentrate the fruit. At 14.0% vol., the 2019 stays dry and taut; the magnum format slows the wine's maturation and stretches its development over years.
Terroir and origin
Morey-Saint-Denis, Côte de Nuits. The Lignier family has farmed Pinot Noir here since the 1880s: Jacques Lignier bought parcels devalued by phylloxera, his son Jules patiently replanted them, Hubert Lignier took over management in 1959 and began bottling under his own name from 1973. Today Laurent Lignier runs the estate, in its fifth generation. Synthetic treatments have been absent from the vineyards since 2007, and the soils are ploughed once again.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Pinot Noir. The cellar acquired in 2008 in Morey-Saint-Denis works by gravity alone: from the must to the bottling, no pump touches the wine. Long, cool macerations precede fermentation, and the proportion of whole clusters has grown over the years. Laurent Lignier deliberately holds back on new oak and spreads it across four coopers, so that no single barrel leaves its mark on the wine.
On the palate
Cool sour cherry and raspberry, beneath them blackcurrant, violet and undergrowth. The tannin is fine-grained, the acidity draws a clear line through the wine, and the finish stays long and calm.
Special features
Twenty-seven rows of vines planted by Henri Lignier in 1955 in the Monts Luisants vineyard are the genetic origin of this estate: from their wood he propagated the rest of the parcels through mass selection in the 1960s, vine by vine. To drink a Lignier is to drink this lineage.
