About this wine

Character

A premier cru from old vines whose concentration rests on clarity rather than power. The style of Domaine Hubert Lignier aims for length and precision; the 14.5% vol. of the 2023 vintage is present in the wine without ever making it heavy. Vinified dry, finely built, made to spend years in the cellar.

Terroir and origin

Morey-Saint-Denis, in the Côte de Nuits. The Lignier family has grown Pinot Noir here since the 1880s; Laurent Lignier now runs the domaine in its fifth generation. In 1973, Hubert Lignier moved the house to estate bottling, turning a mere grape supplier into a name of its own. Bottling takes place on the Route Nationale 74 in Morey-Saint-Denis.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure Pinot Noir. Long, cold macerations precede fermentation, and the share of whole clusters has grown over the years. The cellar, set up in 2008, works by gravity alone: from must to bottling, no pump touches the wine. The estate uses new oak sparingly and spreads it across four coopers so that no single barrel dominates the profile. Synthetic products have been absent from the vineyards since 2007.

On the palate

Dark cherry and blackberry, alongside raspberry, violet, undergrowth and a touch of cedarwood. The tannin is silky and finely integrated, the acidity keeps the fruit in tension, and the finish stays long and mineral. The old vines give the wine a depth that only fully reveals itself after years.

Food pairing suggestions

With braised game such as saddle of venison, with entrecôte in truffle jus, or with rosemary-braised leg of lamb. For a cheese course, mature Époisses and Comté make an excellent match.

Special features

The 3000 ml double magnum is a rare format that favours slow, even ageing in the cellar.
