About this wine
Character
A Pinot Noir built on clarity and length rather than power: finely drawn, dry, at 13.5% vol. In magnum format it matures more slowly than in the 0.75-litre bottle.
Terroir and origin
Morey-Saint-Denis in the Côte de Nuits, where the Lignier family has farmed Pinot Noir since the 1880s. Jacques Lignier bought plots back then that phylloxera had devalued, and his son Jules patiently replanted them. Hubert Lignier took over management in 1959 and began in 1973 to bottle the wines himself rather than selling them in bulk. Today Laurent Lignier runs the domaine, the fifth generation at its helm.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Pinot Noir. No synthetic treatments have been used in the vineyards since 2007. The cellar in Morey-Saint-Denis, acquired in 2008, works by gravity alone — from the must to bottling, no pump moves the wine. Vinification begins with long, cool macerations, the proportion of whole clusters has grown over the years, and new oak is deliberately kept modest and spread across four coopers so that no single barrel sets the tone.
On the palate
Medium-deep ruby red with garnet reflections. On the nose, red cherry, raspberry and redcurrant, with violet and a hint of forest floor. On the palate, fine-grained tannin, vibrant acidity, clearly defined red fruit and a long, calm finish.
Food pairings
Duck breast with cherries and venison saddle with cranberries, as well as coq au vin or a risotto with porcini mushrooms. If opened young, it benefits from decanting.
Special features
The estate's plant material traces back to twenty-seven rows of vines planted in 1955 by Henri Lignier in the Monts Luisants climat, whose wood was used in the 1960s to propagate the remaining plots through selection.
