About this wine
Character
The Sankt Georgen 2021 by Moric is a dry Grüner Veltliner from Burgenland, built on coolness and designed for clarity. Roland Velich has been running his winery since the debut 2001 vintage and exercises radical restraint in the cellar: the wine is intended to express origin rather than opulence. The name promises seriousness, and the wine delivers it with focus and high drinkability.
Terroir and Origin
Burgenland, Austria. Moric cultivates 22.5 hectares of vineyards biodynamically, allowing the vines to express their terroir unfiltered. Bottled at the winery at Kirchengasse 3 in Grosshöflein.
Grape Variety and Vinification
100% Grüner Veltliner from the 2021 vintage. Velich exercises restraint in the cellar with his white wines as well, avoiding anything that might mask the varietal character. The result is a dry wine with 13.5% ABV.
On the Palate
On the nose, yellow apple and pear, joined by meadow herbs, white pepper, and a stony note. The palate is juicy and dense, with citrus zest and plum, carried by cool acidity and a fine texture. The finish is persistent, marked by a subtly tart herbal spice and immense freshness.
Food Pairings
Pairs well with pike-perch with lentils, cod under a mustard crust, and Viennese-style veal schnitzel.
Special Features
Roland Velich came to winemaking by a roundabout route: first a ski instructor, then a croupier, and running his own estate since 2001. In 2023, Falstaff named him Winemaker of the Year. The Sankt Georgen demonstrates that his dedication to origin applies just as much to his white wines.
