About this wine

Character

A Blaufränkisch built on coolness and tension rather than fullness. Roland Velich vinifies the variety with a Burgundian approach, and it shows in this wine: black cherry, violet and a trace of wet stone, carried by the fine tannin structure of old vines. Over a decade of bottle age has added a spicy, earthy layer without taking away the freshness.

Terroir and origin

Zagersdorf, known as Cogrštof in Croatian, lies in Burgenland; the bilingual place name reflects this landscape's Burgenland-Croatian history. Here, through the Jagini project, Velich rescued the village's last old Blaufränkisch vines. Vines of this age date back to a time before Blaufränkisch was bred for yield: they bear little fruit but produce concentrated wines.

Grape variety and vinification

Blaufränkisch, also known as Lemberger, is Velich's life's work. The cellar approach is restrained: spontaneous fermentation in open wooden vats, 22 days of maceration, followed by 20 months of ageing on fine lees in large, used wood, without fining or filtration. Moric farms its vineyards biodynamically. 13.5% vol., dry.

On the palate

Taut and precise, with cool dark fruit, fine-grained tannins and a vibrant acidity that keeps the wine lithe despite its concentration. The finish remains mineral and spicy.

Food pairings

Braised leg of lamb with herbs, game terrine with cranberries, duck breast with dark jus, or a hearty mushroom strudel. Also excellent with aged hard cheese.

Special features

Roland Velich, a former croupier, struck out on his own with Moric in 2001. Falstaff named him Winemaker of the Year in 2023. The estate's 22.5 hectares are planted with vines ranging from 50 to 110 years old.
