About this wine

Character

A deep Beaujolais that holds juiciness and structure together. Dark fruit, spice and a meaty core define the picture; the wine is dry and reaches 14.5% vol.

Terroir and origin

The Champ de Cour vineyard in Moulin-à-Vent covers 31 hectares, of which 1.2 hectares belong to the Chastel family. The plot lies southeast of the village centre on deep, weathered granite and piedmont, old alluvial deposits.

Grape variety and vinification

Gamay noir à jus blanc, around 50 years old, trained in gobelet, with yields between 25 and 35 hl/ha. After hand-harvesting and sorting, whole clusters went into the concrete vat: undamaged berries at the bottom, lightly crushed ones on top, allowing a semi-carbonic maceration to take place. This is followed by a year of ageing in a cement tank.

On the palate

The nose offers up a whole basket of red and dark fruit: sour cherry, raspberry, blackberry, plum and pomegranate, finely laced with orange zest, liquorice, Assam tea and violet pastille. The palate entry is juicy and spicy, the structure meaty and powerful, marked by spice and pepper.

Food pairings

Pairs with fillet of roe deer on kohlrabi-quince salad, with duck confit with king oyster mushrooms and dried plums, or with a picodon cheese tartlet with black walnuts, blackcurrant jelly and walnut bread. Equally good with hearty stews and pungent cheeses.

Special features

Antoine and Olivier Chastel have run Domaine Romanesca together since taking it over in 2018, alongside Olivier's wife Lucrèce, and switched immediately to organic viticulture. Rather than blending their seven hectares spread across Moulin-à-Vent, Fleurie, Morgon and Juliénas, they vinify each parcel separately. This bottling holds 1500 ml.
