About this wine

Character

A red wine of dark power that never tips into excess. On the nose, ripe plum, blackberry, blackcurrant and black cherry, joined by bay leaf, cinnamon, pepper, clove and allspice. The wine needs time in the glass to come together; then a stony coolness and a touch of smoke emerge. In the 2018 vintage, the freshness is even more pronounced, with alcohol at 14.0% vol.

Terroir and origin

The vineyard sits in a remote spot on the border of Porrera and Gratallops, at around 650 metres one of the highest sites in Priorat, north-facing and reachable only via a steep jeep track. The three hectares of terraces consist of pure Llicorella iron slate and are farmed with mules. Ester Nin and Carles Ortiz took over the site in 2004.

Grape variety and vinification

Low-trained, 80- to 110-year-old vines of Garnatxa, Garnatxa Pelluda and Cariñena, hand-harvested. Fermentation happens spontaneously, after which the wine ages for 16 months in a 2,700-litre foudre.

On the palate

Abundant blackberry, black cherry, damson and cassis, joined by cranberry, a hint of sloe, charcoal, violet and hoisin sauce. The tannin is powerful yet ripe, the fruit sweetness sits in precise balance with the acidity, accompanied by a lively minerality from the Llicorella soil. Long, deep and calm on the finish.

Food pairings

Oven-roasted leg of lamb, studded with herbs and garlic, served with roasted peppers. Also excellent with saffron rice with rabbit and piment d'Espelette or a salad of grilled seafood with radicchio and black olives.

Highlights

Every cork from Familia Nin Ortiz carries the phrase «Biodynamic since day one». The estate farms biodynamically, is a member of La Renaissance des Appellations, and bottles without fining or filtration. The magnum format gives this still very young wine time; if opening today, a few hours in the decanter will do it good.
