About this wine

Character

An unsulfured orange wine made from Pinot Blanc, grown in the premier cru vineyard Île des Vergelesses in Pernand-Vergelesses. In the glass, pale orange with a silky-matte haze; on the nose, fresh sugar-glazed brioche, croissant with orange marmalade, flecks of roasted hazelnut and salted butter, joined by sage, lemon balm and bitter orange zest.

Terroir and origin

Domaine Chandon de Briailles was founded in 1834 in Savigny-lès-Beaune and has been run since 2001 by François de Nicolay and his sister Claude. Nearly 14 hectares are spread across twelve vineyard sites in Savigny-lès-Beaune, Pernand-Vergelesses and Aloxe-Corton, ploughed by the four horses Diva, Epi, Farandole and Gipsy. The cellar dates back to the 12th century and was built by monks from the Abbey of Cîteaux.

Grape variety and vinification

Pinot Blanc is the exception in a range otherwise devoted solely to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay; the vines were planted by François de Nicolay's grandfather. Spontaneous fermentation after a long maceration, followed by ageing on the lees, bottled unfined and without added sulfites. 13.5% Vol., dry.

On the palate

Tannin sets the tone from the start: fine-grained, persistent, invigorating like a hot cup of Darjeeling. It coats the mouth silkily, the astringency stays lively, and it also leads the aromatic profile. Delicate toasted notes of salted-butter dark toast, alongside orange marmalade.

Food pairing recommendations

Pair with focaccia with green olives, almonds, rosemary and orange zest, skin-seared red mullet in a rock-fish fumet with sage-orange aroma, or spicy roast chicken.

Special features

The vineyards have been farmed organically since 1998, with the shift to biodynamic farming in 2005, and Demeter certification since 2011. Claude de Nicolay, cellar master since 1988, vinifies without fining or filtration; since 2017, selected cuvées have been bottled entirely without added sulfites.
