About this wine
Character
A Pinot Noir that in the 2017 vintage shows more juice than acidity: warm, round fruit over a mineral core, with tannin that is almost caressing. Still shy in its expression, but clearly built for ageing.
Terroir and origin
The Île des Vergelesses premier cru covers 9.41 hectares in Pernand-Vergelesses and is flanked by Les Vergelesses in Savigny and Les Vergelesses in Pernand. The soil is composed of siliceous and calcareous red marl with a high iron content. This terroir's quality is considered superior to all the village's other premiers crus, ranking at grand cru level. The plots face east.
Grape variety and vinification
Pinot Noir from vines averaging 40 years old, some as old as 80. Claude de Nicolay, cellar mistress since 1988, ferments with whole clusters, a proportion that has varied by vintage and become house standard since 2011, and bottles without fining or filtration. A maximum of 15 to 20 percent new oak, 14 to 20 months of barrel ageing in the 12th-century Cistercian cellar. Sulphur is used only sparingly. 13.5% ABV.
On the palate
The nose stays cool: red then black currants, a few cherries, spice, a light touch of oak. On the palate the wine turns noticeably warmer. Cherries and wild berries lend juiciness, the acidity recedes, and the minerality carries through to a long, warm-fruited finish.
Food pairing suggestions
Pinot risotto with wild mushrooms and duck breast, bacon-wrapped grouse with glazed apple wedges, or, for a vegetarian option, almond-date couscous with beetroot and roasted carrots.
Highlights
The domaine in Savigny-lès-Beaune has been family-owned since 1834 and is run by siblings François and Claude de Nicolay. Four horses work the vine rows: Diva, Epi, Farandole and Gipsy. Biodynamic farming since 2005, Demeter certification since 2011. This bottling is lightly sulphured and will benefit from further bottle age.
