About this wine
Character
A Chardonnay built on tension rather than richness. Ripe lemon and white peach stay lean and precise, with white blossom layered on top, while the oak stays in the background. The whole is carried by a lively vein of acidity.
Terroir and origin
The "En Chatenay" climat lies within the Pouilly-Fuissé appellation in the southern Mâconnais. Limestone soils with clay and loam inclusions shape the minerality of the Chardonnays here, and some of the estate's vines are over 80 years old. La Soufrandière farms 12 hectares across Pouilly-Vinzelles, Pouilly-Fuissé and Saint-Véran, biodynamically according to Rudolf Steiner's principles, working some plots with a horse to avoid compacting the soil.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Chardonnay. Spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts, aged in used oak barrels of various sizes, with extended lees contact for texture and complexity. Bottled unfiltered and with only minimal sulphur.
On the palate
Dry, with a precise acid structure and a creamy texture from the extended lees ageing. The saline minerality carries through to a long finish. The 1500 ml magnum format gives the wine time to develop.
Food pairing recommendations
With roast turbot with beurre blanc, coquilles Saint-Jacques or porcini risotto. Also with veal in morel cream sauce and aged Comté.
Notable features
La Soufrandière in Vinzelles traces back to Jules Bret, who acquired one hectare in the Clos de Grand-Père in 1947. Since 2000, his grandsons Jean-Philippe and Jean-Guillaume Bret have run the estate, joined by Marc-Antoine in 2010. Ecocert certified since 2003, Demeter since 2006.
